My Latest Book: Shy Ways

September 26, 2017

Shy Ways is the title of my newest book. It's based on my pre-teen years growing up as a Japanese-American in the south.  The main character, Sarah Templeton, is similar to me, but the book is a work of fiction. Sarah is both ignored and ridiculed in her new school because she's different but she faces her own struggle to accept her Asian heritage. The story is set during the 1970's when the war in Vietnam is winding down, but memories of another war haunt Sarah's mother. When Sarah's mother hears an emergency siren from a nearby weapon's plant she believes it's an air raid siren and becomes paralyzed with fear and grief. Sarah must find a way to wake her mother from the past.
